Caring for Your Leather Watch Strap
It can be easy to forget that the craftsmanship that goes into a watch isn’t exclusive to the face, but extends to the strap as well. And just as a few puffs of breath and a quick wipe-down on your shirt isn’t enough to properly clean the face of your watch, picking some dust out from the buckle with your fingernails shouldn’t be the extent of your strap maintenance. The biggest factor in strap deterioration and odor is humidity and sweat, especially in these summer months. For standard wear, dab your watch strap with a damp cloth once a week. For stains and accumulated sweat, you’ll want to stir a tablespoon of water with baking soda until it becomes a slightly thick paste, then lightly spread the paste along the entire body of the strap. If possible, remove the strap before doing this. Let the strap sit for an hour and wash off the paste, then let dry overnight. Some watch enthusiasts go on to polish the strap with a small amount of saddle soap or olive oil.
